Every solar installation we complete is different. Here are six representative case studies showcasing the range of our work across West Yorkshire.
South-facing roof · 4kWp system + 10kWh battery · Installed March 2024
The Thornton family in Chapel Allerton had seen their electricity bills more than double over the previous two years, rising to over £220 per month. With four children and both parents working from home, their daily consumption was significant. They wanted a solar solution that would meaningfully reduce their dependence on grid electricity across all hours of the day — not just during daylight hours.
Leeds Solar designed a 4kWp system comprising 10 × 400W Jinko Solar Tiger Neo panels mounted on the south-facing rear roof at 35° pitch. Paired with a SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter and a 10kWh GivEnergy battery, the system was sized to cover the family's daytime consumption whilst storing sufficient surplus to power the evening and overnight.
"Our electricity bills dropped from £220 to under £40 a month almost immediately. The battery means we're using solar energy even at midnight. Leeds Solar were superb throughout." — Richard Thornton, Chapel Allerton
Flat commercial roof · 50kWp system · Installed September 2023
Harrison Engineering in Morley operates precision manufacturing equipment that runs from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Their annual electricity bill had reached £62,000 — a significant overhead threatening their competitiveness. The Managing Director wanted to explore whether solar could provide a meaningful and rapid return on investment given their high daytime energy consumption profile, which aligned perfectly with peak solar generation periods.
Leeds Solar designed a 50kWp commercial rooftop system using 125 × 400W panels on an east-west ballasted flat roof mounting system — requiring no roof penetrations. The system feeds directly into the factory's main distribution board, maximising self-consumption during operating hours. A SolarEdge commercial inverter provides panel-level monitoring and optimisation.
"Our solar system has transformed our energy costs. Leeds Solar handled everything — survey, planning, installation and commissioning — absolutely professionally." — David Harrison, Managing Director
Ground-mounted system · 75kWp · Installed May 2023
Stonegate Farm near Wetherby runs irrigation pumps, grain drying equipment and cold storage facilities that consume significant amounts of electricity, particularly during harvest season. The farm's annual electricity bill exceeded £28,000, and the owners were keen to reduce both their energy costs and their environmental footprint whilst improving long-term energy security for the farming business.
With limited suitable roof space, a ground-mounted 75kWp system was the ideal solution. Leeds Solar installed 188 × 400W panels on a south-facing ground-mount system in a corner of an arable field, connected to the farm's electricity supply via an underground cable. A 30kWh battery bank provides overnight power for refrigeration units.
"The ground-mounted system was perfect for our farm. Leeds Solar understood our agricultural requirements and delivered a system that has genuinely transformed our energy economics." — Robert Featherstone, Stonegate Farm
South-west roof · 6kWp + 9.5kWh battery + Zappi EV charger · Installed January 2024
The Patel family in Harrogate had recently switched to an electric vehicle and wanted to maximise the financial benefits of home EV charging using solar energy. They had a south-west facing roof with good solar potential, and wanted a system that would comprehensively cover their household electricity needs and EV charging requirements. With two adults commuting 25 miles daily in their EV, transport energy costs were a significant consideration.
Leeds Solar specified a 6kWp system with 15 × 400W panels, a 9.5kWh Tesla Powerwall 2, and a myenergi Zappi EV charger. The Zappi intelligently prioritises solar energy for EV charging, with the Powerwall providing backup for household loads overnight. On a sunny day, the family can fully charge their EV and power the house entirely from solar.
"The solar, battery and EV charger combination is exceptional. We're spending a fraction of what we used to on energy and transport. Leeds Solar made the whole process effortless." — Anita Patel, Harrogate
Flat roof installation · 30kWp system · Installed July 2023
A three-storey professional services building in Headingley housing a legal firm and two accountancy practices had seen its shared electricity costs rise to £24,000 per year. The building management company wanted to explore solar as a means of reducing operating costs for tenants whilst demonstrating an ESG commitment that would help attract and retain professional tenants with sustainability credentials requirements.
Leeds Solar designed a 30kWp ballasted flat roof system that required no structural modifications. The 75-panel system, paired with a SolarEdge commercial inverter and sub-metering, allows individual floor energy consumption to be tracked and billed accurately. A dedicated monitoring dashboard was provided for the building management company.
"The solar system has reduced our service charge, improved our EPC rating and helped us market the building as environmentally responsible. Leeds Solar delivered an excellent outcome." — Marcus Williams, Building Manager
Existing 3kWp system · Added 10kWh GivEnergy battery · Completed October 2024
The Clark family in Roundhay had installed solar panels back in 2015 under the original Feed-in Tariff scheme. Whilst their FiT payments continued, they were frustrated that much of their solar generation was being exported for relatively low payment rates whilst they continued to pay expensive evening electricity tariffs. They wanted to retrofit battery storage to their existing system to capture and use more of their own solar energy.
Leeds Solar assessed the existing 3kWp system and found the original inverter still performing well. An AC-coupled GivEnergy 10kWh battery was installed — a retrofit approach that works with any existing solar system without replacing the original inverter. The installation was completed in four hours with no disruption to the existing FiT agreement.
"We'd been generating solar power for years but not making the most of it. The battery retrofit has completely transformed our self-consumption — and Leeds Solar fitted it without touching our original FiT arrangement." — Diane Clark, Roundhay
