Generate solar power and protect your vehicle at the same time. Leeds Solar designs and installs bespoke solar carports for homes, businesses and car parks across West Yorkshire.
A solar carport — also known as a solar car canopy — is a freestanding or wall-mounted structure that supports solar panels at roof level whilst providing covered parking beneath. Unlike roof-mounted systems, solar carports don't require any penetration of your property's roof and can be installed even if your roof is unsuitable or already at capacity.
Solar carports are an increasingly popular solution for Yorkshire homeowners who have north-facing roofs, limited roof space, or who want to add solar capacity without touching their existing roof. They're also widely used by businesses to generate solar power over car parks — turning previously unproductive areas into clean energy generators.
Combined with an EV charger — particularly an intelligent charger like the myenergi Zappi — a solar carport becomes a self-contained "solar filling station" for your electric vehicle, allowing you to charge using free solar electricity directly beneath the canopy.
Leeds Solar designs, supplies and installs bespoke solar carports across West Yorkshire. We handle the entire project from initial survey and planning advice through to electrical connection and commissioning, using high-quality galvanised steel structures and premium solar panels rated for 25+ years of outdoor service.
Solar carports generate the same clean electricity as roof-mounted panels. A single-car canopy with 6–8 panels generates approximately 2–2.5kWp, whilst a double carport can accommodate 10–14 panels and generate 3.5–4.5kWp.
A solar canopy shields your car from rain, frost, hail, bird droppings, tree sap and UV fading — reducing cleaning requirements and protecting your vehicle's paintwork and interior from Yorkshire's variable weather.
Perfect if your roof is unsuitable for solar — north-facing, heavily shaded, in poor condition, or already fully utilised. A solar carport is freestanding and completely independent of your property's roof structure.
Pair with an EV charger to create a solar-powered charging station. Smart chargers like the myenergi Zappi prioritise solar generation for EV charging, meaning you can fuel your car almost entirely from free sunshine.
Ideal for business car parks, supermarkets, leisure centres, hotels and schools. Large solar canopy arrays over car parks can generate significant amounts of electricity — enough to power entire buildings in some cases.
A well-designed solar carport enhances kerb appeal and adds genuine value to your property — both through the solar generation asset and the practical sheltered parking provision.
Our design process begins with a site survey to assess your driveway or car park dimensions, ground conditions, orientation, shading and any planning considerations. We produce a structural design and 3D visualisation so you can see exactly how your carport will look before we build it.
Residential solar carports may fall under permitted development rights, but this depends on size, location relative to the road and whether your property is in a conservation area or is listed. We'll advise you on planning requirements during the survey and can assist with any necessary applications.
We use hot-dip galvanised steel frames designed and engineered to withstand Yorkshire's weather — including the Pennine winds. Frames are powder-coated in your choice of colour. Panel frames are anodised aluminium. All structural calculations are provided.
We offer both single (one vehicle) and double (two vehicles) carport configurations, as well as bespoke multi-bay designs for commercial applications. Lean-to configurations against an existing wall or garage are also available.
Residential solar carports typically start from around £8,000 for a single carport with 6–8 panels. Double carports start from around £12,000. Commercial solar canopy projects are quoted individually. The cost includes design, supply, installation and electrical connection. Yes — and we highly recommend it. Adding a myenergi Zappi EV charger to your solar carport creates a complete solar charging solution. The Zappi prioritises excess solar generation for EV charging, meaning your car charges primarily on free solar electricity. We install EV chargers as part of all solar carport projects.
Potentially, yes — unlike roof-mounted solar panels which usually benefit from permitted development rights, a solar carport is a new structure and may require planning permission depending on its size and location. We assess this during our survey and guide you through the process if permission is needed.
Most residential solar carport installations are completed in 2–3 days — foundation work on day one, steelwork and panels on day two, electrical connection and commissioning on day three. Larger commercial projects take longer and are planned individually.
